Es ist mal wieder soweit. Robert Mugabe hat Geburtstag. Woher wir das wissen? Weil Parteifunktionäre von Zimbabwes altem und neuen Präsidenten auf ihrer turnusmäßigen Spendenreise sind, wie die Zimbabwe Times berichtet. Gesucht werden: linientreue Geschäftsleute, die etwas für den Festtag des ,,großen Führers” springen lassen, aber auch gerne Privatpersonen, die sich mit kleinen bis großen Geschenken eine politische Karriere in Zimbabwe erkaufen wollen. Während Mitarbeiter im öffentlichen Dienst immer noch für die Zahlung ihres monatlichen Gehaltes von 150 US-Dollar streiken und große Teile des Landes unter einer Dürreperiode leiden, die eine verheerende Hungersnot nach sich zieht, beschäftigt sich die Jugendorganisation von Mugabes Regierungspartei Zanu-PF eifrig mit den Festvorbereitungen.

Funktioniert hat dieses System in den vergangenen Jahren prächtig. Zum 85. Geburtstag feierte Mugabe mit seinen Vertrauten für rund 300 000 US-Dollar. Dabei handelt es sich, so man dem offiziellen Parteiduktus folgt, gar nicht um eine profane Party, sondern um eine ,, Bewegung”, einen ,,Ruck”, der an diesem Tag durch das Land gehen soll. Schon jetzt übertreffen sich Minister, staatliche Verbündete und andere Gratulanten mit großformatigen Glückwunsch-Anzeigen in Zimbabwes Tagespresse. Mugabe hat sogar einen Preis ausgelobt für das originellste Design – im letzten Jahr gewann diesen das Verteidigungsministerium, das den Diktator in seiner Veröffentlichung ,,das großartige Krokodil” gehuldigt hatte.

Am Festtag selbst werden tausende Vertreter der Zanu-PF Jugendorganisation dem Jubilar mit roten Schals danken, während dieser – ebenso mit rotem Schal geschmückt – einen riesige Geburtstagstorte anschneidet. Für den 26. Februar ist nach Berichten der Zimbabwe Times eine Gala mit nationalen und internationalen Musikern geplant, bei der von 6 Uhr abends bis 6 Uhr morgens gefeiert werden soll. Wovon Mugabes Volk freilich wenig haben wird. UN-Experten rechnen damit, das 15 Prozent der Bevölkerung Zimbabwes dieses Jahr ohne Lebensmittelspenden von außen nicht überlebt.
